Update:
On a pre, in Germany

The Mail newspaper report that Newcastle are set to spend part of their pre-season programme this summer at a training camp in Germany.

Eddie Howe's side will follow in the footsteps of Arsenal in the last two year by using facilities at the HQ of United's forthcoming kit providers, adidas.

Their World of Sports facility is in Herzogenaurach near Nuremburg. Details are yet to be confirmed, including whether any public friendly match will take place.

2023/24:
Spurs (n) coverage

Ahead of next week's friendly against Spurs in Australia, our opponents are advertising a live stream as part of their Spurs Play subscription package.

We're trying to find out whether NUFC will offer anything similar.

PS: The Australian-only streaming service 10 Play have now listed live coverage of both our post-season games in Melbourne.

Match action is online here

Newcastle's European hopes still lie in the balance after a disappointing defeat at Old Trafford on Wednesday, gifting three goals to the hosts and squandering numerous chances in front of goal.

Trailing to Kobbie Mainoo's 31st minute opener after dominating the early stages, the visitors levelled just four minutes into the second period when Anthony Gordon latched on to Jacob Murphy's cross.

Parity lasted less than ten minutes however, a fine first Premier League goal by ex-mackem loanee Amad Diallo leaving Martin Dubravka completely helpless.

Substitute Rasmus Hojlund then appeared to have sealed victory six minutes before the end of normal time with what was almost his first touch, only for Lewis Hall to net from distance following a corner.

However there was to be no dramatic late leveller and what may have been the best chance in a decade for Eddie Howe's side to claim maximum points here instead saw them leave empty-handed.

Newcastle ended the night seventh - overtaken by Chelsea thanks to their midweek 2-1 win at Brighton - and level on points with the Red Devils, but still ahead of them by virtue of a superior goal difference of 24.

Current PL table:

Pos Team P Gd Pts
5 Spurs 37 10 63
6 Chelsea 37 13 60
7 Newcastle 37 21 57
8 Man United 37 -3 57
9 West Ham 37 -12 52

The task for the Magpies away to Brentford on Sunday is now simple: emulate or improve on the result that Erik ten Hag's team achieve at Brighton.

That would guarantee seventh and a Conference League playoff place, unless Manchester United then overcame Manchester City in the FA Cup Final on Saturday week - earning them a Europa League spot, pushing the sixth place finisher into the Europa Conference and depriving the team finishing in seventh of European football.

The other positive scenario requires Chelsea to lose at home to Bournemouth on Sunday and Newcastle to win at Brentford, in order to bridge the three point gap and occupy sixth place on goal difference: enough to snag either a Europa League or a Europa Conference berth depending on the Wembley outcome.

Back to this game though and rarely have the Magpies created so many clear chances at this venue - even including their 3-0 Carabao Cup win here last year.

Gordon, Sean Longstaff and Alexander Isak all failed when one-on-one with Andre Onano, although Gordon's was due to a clear foul by Sofyan Amrabat missed by onfield referee Robert Jones and ignored by VAR man Jarred Gillett - who presumably thought that the technology had already been scrapped.

As well as being denied that penalty, Dan Burn saw his header cleared off the line by Casemiro a fraction before crossing it,
Bruno Guimaraes missed a clear header and Isak's blocked shot hit the bar.

The substitutes fared no better: Joelinton's header tipped over and Miggy Almiron almost converting a Gordon cross-shot.

Despite that profligacy it was a series of defensive lapses that ultimately cost the black & whites dearly.

The returning Kieran Trippier played Mainoo onside for the first, a poor clearing header from Murphy let the unmarked Diallo fire in the second and Hojlund was flanked by three defenders when he dispatched a low shot under the culpable Dubravka for the third.

Self-inflicted blows at both ends of the pitch tonight leave Newcastle more reliant on the efforts of others in order to achieve a tangible reward for this season.

Hope isn't lost though and it's now up to us - and Manchester City - to make this result immaterial.

Former Magpie Ryan Taylor was in the away end.

The well-publicised drainage problems at Old Trafford during the Arsenal match prompted a few travelling Mags to take their own precautions.

We spotted folks sporting swimming goggles and snorkels, but the lad clad in a diving suit and flippers made the biggest splash.

Eddie Howe said:

"We had chances and I felt we could score at any moment. But we have lost the game because of how we defended their goals. We should hang our heads really. The game got away from us in key moments.

"I don't think our goal felt at risk, but we've conceded three goals and the manner of those goals is hugely frustrating.
"

On the penalty claim:

"I thought it was a penalty. I thought that’s what VAR was good at.

"I have always been in an era where the referee makes a decision and I back it. I would possibly keep it with offsides, but I want more power with referees."

On Kieran Trippier starting:

"It was dictated to us by Tino's
(Livramento) injury.

(He) picked up an injury on Saturday to his ankle, so Kieran had to play when he's had limited training time.

"Like a number of players for us this season, he's put himself forward for the group, and I think he's played well, but he was fatiguing in that moment, so we had to take him off."

Anthony Gordon:

"I have watched it back and it is a clear penalty.

"I do not mind the referee getting the decision wrong on the pitch, but I do not understand what the point of VAR is then. It is there to correct mistakes.

"Amrabat goes down my Achilles and then pushes me in the back. Casimiro gets the ball but there are two fouls before that. I just don't see the point in (VAR).

"I knew straight away. That is why I did not appeal because I did not mind the ref not giving it. It is fast. But I will wait for the VAR to check. You can see me tell my team-mates it is a clear penalty.

"Then we carry on and I have got no sock left. How can that be possible?"

Referee:
Robert Jones - the Merseysider completed a full set of appointments in this fixture, having overseen the Carabao Cup meeting here and PL fixture at SJP.

Jones also refereed our early season 0-1 loss at Manchester City and was most recently seen in the middle for our epic 4-3 victory over West Ham.

VAR: Jarred Gillett who maintained his history of non-decision making. Wearing glasses at Stockley Park doesn't improve his ineptitude.

Stats:

Kobbie Mainoo's opener was the first PL goal that Newcastle have conceded to Manchester United since Edison Cavani at SJP in December 2021, ending a run of 320 minutes.

Newcastle missed the chance of their first PL double against the Red Devils; they last beat them home and away in the league in the 1930/31 season.

They now need to emulate or better Manchester United's season-closing result on Sunday in order to finish above them for the first time since 1976/77.

This was the tenth time that the two clubs have met three times in the same season; Newcastle are yet to emerge with a 100% record intact.

Anthony Gordon
netted his 11th PL goal of the season and now has 12 for the Magpies in that competition, taking him level with Ruel Fox, Kevin Nolan, Allan Saint-Maximin and Steven Taylor.

Lewis Hall
scored his second Newcastle goal and like the first earlier this season, it came from distance against Manchester United at the Stretford End.

That first came in the Carabao Cup while tonight's was a debut strike in the Premier League - making him the 169th to do so from the 267 players to have worn our colours in that competition.

Hall also becomes the 20th different Magpie to find the net this season in the PL, extending a record that had stood at 17 before the current campaign. It also equals Manchester United's record PL tally, which was set in the 2012/13 season.

With one game remaining, Newcastle have now netted 32 times on the road in the PL, equal with their tally last season. Their highest away total is 34, coming in the 2001/02 season.

In all competitions so far this season, Newcastle have scored 98 goals (81 in the PL, six in the CL, six in the FAC and five in the Carabao Cup).

That PL total of 81 has only been exceeded once by the club, with 82 scored in their debut season of 1993/94, which consisted of 42 games not 38.

Newcastle have conceded 340 goals during league and cup games against Manchester United, the highest total by any club. The Magpies have scored 249 times against them in all competitions.

Update:
Ashley appeal:
date confirmed

Following last Thursday's hearing, the Appeal Court judges hearing Sports Direct's request to grant an injunction against NUFC are scheduled to give their decision this coming Friday (May 17th).

The lawsuit challenges NUFC's stated intention to discontinue supplying replica kits, seeking to continue the current arrangement pending a court case.

This is Mike Ashley's latest attempt to maintain supply of kits, having failed to convince a Competition Appeal Tribunal to do so and also lost an initial appeal against that decision.

Following thirteenth and ninth-place finishes in their first two PL campaigns, the Bees are assured of either fifteenth or sixteenth spot this time round.

It's assumed that Sunday will see Ivan Toney make his final appearance for Brentford. He's failed to score in his last 11 PL games but has three goals against Newcastle in four PL outings against his former club.

On home soil this season, Thomas Frank's side have won just five times, drawing seven games and losing the remaining six.

On This Day in History
16th May

Born Or Died:

1893 George Stanley Seymour born, Kelloe, Durham. (1920-29)

As captain, manager, director and Vice -President, Stan Seymour served United in three spells over almost seventy years.

Known as "Mister Newcastle" thanks to his later achievements on and off the field, Seymour was initially discarded by the club as a teenage amateur before World War I, returning to play local football for Shildon.

After a brief spell at Bradford City, his career took off after some impressive displays for Greenock Morton, before his move to Newcastle followed in May 1920.

The return on the £2,500 fee paid was instant as Seymour marked his debut with a goal on the opening day of the season, although his side only managed a 1-1 home draw with West Bromwich Albion.

Four solid seasons brought successive top ten finishes, culminating in a 2-0 victory in the 1924 FA Cup Final, where Seymour scored the second goal in the dying minutes of the club’s Wembley debut.

Stan accepted an FA invitation to join a tour of Australia in 1925 (along with fellow Magpie Charlie Spencer), winning unofficial England caps during a mammoth 25 game tour that took five months to conclude including one month journey time by sea each way!

Seymour’s finest club campaign came in 1926/27 as he was an ever-present in the Championship-winning side, scoring eighteen goals – the last of which came in a title- clinching 1-1 draw at West Ham United.

Two seasons later came his retirement from playing, his final appearance coming at SJP against Arsenal in October 1928.

Nine years later however, Stan was invited to join the Newcastle Board, giving up his sideline of a newspaper match compiler but retaining ownership of the sports shop he’d established in the city.

After the war years intervened, Seymour set about reconstructing the side which would achieve promotion back to the First Division at the second attempt in 1948.

Having handed over nominal control of team affairs to George Martin, Seymour took over again when Martin defected to Aston Villa in 1950, presiding over two FA Cup Final wins.

A dip in results though saw Stan convinced by his fellow directors to make way for another team manager, Duggie Livingstone arriving at Christmas 1954.

He was to last barely a year though, with Seymour famously over-ruling him before the 1955 FA Final, when Jackie Milburn was omitted from the first teamsheet submitted to the directors for their approval.

Stan remained at SJP while Charlie Mitten and Norman Smith were tried as manager. However his masterstroke was bringing Joe Harvey back in 1962 to fill the role.

Harvey eventually departed in 1975, with Seymour retiring as a club director the following year - aged 83.

He passed away two years later, having seen his son join the board – although he didn’t live to see Stan Seymour junior emulate his father and become Chairman.

1921 Charlie Wayman born, Bishop Auckland. (1941-47)

Coming to prominence in the football team at Chilton Colliery where he worked, Charlie was signed on by Spennymoor United and wrote to Newcastle requesting a trial.

That came to fruition in 1941 and although war service in the Royal Navy restricted his availability, Wayman showed his goalscoring ability in wartime league matches (also guesting for Portsmouth).

Switching to centre forward in the wake of Albert Stubbin's move to Liverpool, Charlie's first game in that role was memorable - despite missing a first minute penalty kick.

Wayman went on to score four times in a 13-0 home trouncing of Newport County and ended up netting 34 in the 1946/47 season.

However, he fell out with United and requested a transfer after being dropped from the FA Cup Semi Final team against Charlton in March 1947. United lost 4-0.

That rift was never healed (although not publicly disclosed) and Charlie moved on to Southampton that October in exchange for a club record fee of £10K.

He continued to score goals there and was as prolific when moving on to Preston North End in September 1953.

At Deepdale he was part of the side who lost the title to Arsenal on goal average and were beaten by West Brom in the Cup Final.

Spells with Middlesbrough and Darlington then saw him forced into retirement due to a knee injury in 1958, having netted a career total of 250 goals in 382 games.

Charlie's final involvement with football proved to be a coaching role at Evenwood Town, after which he worked for Scottish & Newcastle Breweries.

Married with four sons and two daughters, Charlie passed away in February 2006.

The hosts were coached by former England international William Townley, who previously appeared for Blackburn Rovers and Darwen. He also acted as match referee.

Amalgamating with TSV Vestenburgsgreuth in 1996, they became SpVgg Greuther Fürth and still occupy their original ground.

United exited the Coronation Cup competition at the semi-final stage, comprehensively beaten at the Ibrox home of Rangers.

A lifeless display brought some catcalling from fans and even when given the chance to net from the penalty spot on 76 minutes, Bobby Mitchell contrived to miss the target.

Across the city meanwhile, over 70,000 fans were watching Celtic defeat Manchester United 2-1 at Hampden Park.

This was an eight team event to mark the arrival of Liz on the throne and involved ourselves, Spurs, Arsenal, Manchester United, Rangers, Celtic, Hibs and the Dons.

The final took place in front of 117,060 fans at Hampden and saw Celtic beat Hibs 2-0.

Team: Simpson, Cowell, Batty, Harvey, Brennan, Crowe, White, Mulgrew, Milburn, Hannah, Mitchell.

Having been thumped 0-3 in Yorkshire just weeks earlier, the Magpies gained revenge over Don Revie's side.

A fine late strike by Alan Suddick saw him cement his position as top scorer in the league with 14 to his name.

Two points gained completed Newcastle's escape from relegation in their first season back in the top flight - and was enough to raise them above their mackem rivals.

After a 0-0 draw at Roker Park, hopes were high going into the second leg of this semi-final, with a place in Wembley play-offs seemingly beckoning.

In the event though, Newcastle never got going and were beaten by goals from Denis Smith's blue-clad goblin striking duo.

This remains just about the only game either of the NUFC.com authors recall leaving early - the pathetic pitch invasion hastening both our (separate) exits from the ground.

66 arrests were made and 12 police offers injured (of 550 on duty); referee George Courtney forced to take the players off the field for 18 minutes after the second goal.

One unlucky student-type in the Bacchus who chose an inopportune time to ask the final score was subsequently treated in the RVI for a burst eardrum...

Among those watching from the Milburn Stand were former Magpie trio Chris Waddle, Peter Beardsley and Paul Gascoigne, who left the England squad to attend.

If you can't remember this game, count your blessings....it's worth recalling the team Jim Smith put on the park that night:

Team: Burridge, Stimson, Bradshaw (Dillon 46), Aitken, Anderson, Scott, Askew (O'Brien 77), Brock, Quinn, McGhee, Kristensen.

PS: The mackems would lose 0-1 to Swindon Town, but still gain promotion after the Wiltshire side were demoted for illegal match betting. The Swindon chairman and manager backed Town to be beaten in the FA Cup at.....Newcastle. They were, 0-5.

The Gunners completed the League and Cup double with this routine Wembley victory over a docile United side.

Magpies boss Kenny Dalglish was probably the only man on the planet who thought putting Pistone at right back instead of Steve Watson was a good idea. That's apart from Marc Overmars - and Arsene Wenger...

United's pre-Wembley slump continued as they made it six games without a win since beating Spurs in the FA Cup Semi-Final.

Without Alan Shearer and Duncan Ferguson, only a thunderbolt from Didi Hamann avoided an embarrassing loss to an already-relegated Rovers side.

After the euphoria of beating Boro, normal service sadly resumed for the Magpies.

A mixture of poor luck, poor decisions, poor football and poor play - and a feeling of "job done" - cost Alan Shearer's side dear.

Obafemi Martins was unfortunate to hit the post and Mark Viduka denied a legitimate goal for some non-existent pushing, but everything else was self-inflicted.

Sluggish defending allowed Diomansy Kamara to shoot Fulham ahead while Sebastien Bassong's red card was well deserved.

2012 Ex-Newcastle boss Kenny Dalglish saw his second managerial spell at Anfield end, paying the price for a troubled first full season back in charge of the Reds.

League Cup Final success failed to keep Kenny in post; an eighth place league finish (below Everton) and various underachieving big money buys, including Andy Carroll.

Our own chances of avoiding the drop rested on final day results involving ourselves, Hull City and the mackems.

An intense atmosphere inspired United to their best display of the season; Callum Wilson's pressure breaking the deadlock before Bruno Guimaraes netted a late second to put Mikel Arteta's side out of their misery.
